Floriańska is not quite three hundred metres long and forms the first stretch of the Royal Route. It was laid out when the city was chartered in 1257, so its line has not moved in seven and a half centuries.
At number 45 is Jama Michalika, a café opened in 1895 that housed the Green Balloon cabaret in the early twentieth century; the Art Nouveau interior keeps its original fittings. At number 41 stands Jan Matejko’s house, where the painter was born and died, now part of the National Museum. Number 25 holds the Jagiellonian University’s Pharmacy Museum.
The street is pedestrianised and can be very crowded. Early morning shows it in a completely different light from the middle of the day.
