Ghetto Heroes Square

The main square of the wartime ghetto in Podgórze, now a memorial of seventy empty chairs.

The square, formerly called Zgody, fell inside the walls of the ghetto the German authorities created in Podgórze in 1941. Deportations were assembled here, and selections were carried out here during the liquidation actions.

In 2005 it was turned into a memorial designed by Piotr Lewicki and Kazimierz Latok. Seventy cast-iron chairs stand across it, echoing the furniture carried out of flats and left on the pavement. An empty chair is a plain enough sign of absence.

The Eagle Pharmacy stands on the square, the only business inside the ghetto run by a non-Jewish Pole, Tadeusz Pankiewicz, and now a museum. Fragments of the ghetto wall survive nearby.
