The Rynek Underground opened in 2010, after several years of excavation beneath the eastern part of the square. The exhibition covers close to four thousand square metres at a depth of about four metres.
Visitors move along glass walkways suspended over the original layers: eleventh-century cobbles, the foundations of market stalls, burn lines from successive fires and the remains of the city weighing house. The display presents the square as a place of work and trade rather than ceremony, showing where the merchant routes ran and what was actually bought and sold.
Multimedia is used sparingly, mostly to reconstruct buildings of which only footings survive. Entry is by timed ticket and in season sells out several days ahead.
