The Krakus Mound stands on Lasota Hill in Podgórze and rises about sixteen metres. Its date is still disputed; most research points to the seventh or eighth century, which would make it the oldest structure in Kraków. Nobody knows who raised it, or why.
Tradition links it to the legendary Prince Krak, founder of the city, though no find has ever confirmed this. Excavations in the 1930s produced no burial, but did turn up objects from several different periods.
The summit gives a view across the whole city, from Nowa Huta to Wawel. On Easter Monday the Rękawka fair, one of Kraków’s oldest, is held at its foot. The climb is short but steep and on an unpaved path.
