Skałka is a limestone outcrop in Kazimierz, holding the church of St Michael the Archangel and St Stanislaus. By tradition, Bishop Stanislaus of Szczepanów was killed here in 1079 on the orders of King Bolesław the Bold. Historians still argue over what actually happened.
The present church is Baroque, from the eighteenth century. A pool stands in front of it, attached to a number of legends. The Pauline order has looked after the site since 1472.
The Crypt of the Distinguished lies beneath, holding among others the chronicler Jan Długosz, the artists Stanisław Wyspiański and Jacek Malczewski, the composer Karol Szymanowski and the poet Czesław Miłosz. Burial here is a form of recognition granted to figures of particular importance to Polish culture.
