Szeroka is more a square than a street, and for centuries it was the centre of Jewish life in Kazimierz. Several synagogues stand around it: the Old Synagogue, the oldest surviving in Poland, built in the fifteenth century and later remodelled in Renaissance style, and the Remuh Synagogue with its adjoining cemetery of 1535.
Rabbi Moses Isserles, one of the foremost Jewish scholars of his age, is buried in the Remuh cemetery, and pilgrims still come from around the world. The surviving wall was built from fragments of gravestones destroyed during the war.
The Jewish Culture Festival closes with a concert on Szeroka each summer. Outside that week the square is usually calmer than the Main Market.
