The Royal Route with a guide: what you will see

The Royal Route is a perfect choice for those who visit Krakow for the first time. You will walk around the streets that once served as the main route for foreign kings, envoys and distinguished guests who would come to the Royal City for celebrations such as coronations, weddings and funerals. We will show you Krakow’s most important landmarks. Beneath the Main Market Square there is an underground permanent exhibition that houses, among others, pieces of former cobbled pathways and foundations of buildings which stood on the square till the 19th century. This museum also boasts a wide range of modern technologies, as well as numerous multimedia installations.

Selected places: Jan Matejko Square, the Barbican and the Florian’s Gate, ul. Floriańska (“ul.” means “street” in Polish), the Main Market Square with St Mary’s Church, Cloth Hall, St Adalbert Church, the Town Hall Tower, ul. Grodzka, the Franciscan Church and the Bishops’ Palace, ul. Kanonicza, the Wawel Hill.

Who this tour is for

This is one of the routes we are asked for most often. It works as a first meeting with Kraków, and just as well as a return after some years away.

  • Independent travellers and families
  • Organised groups, school parties included
  • Visitors from abroad, since we also guide in English

How long it takes and what to know

Duration

The route normally takes 3 – 4 h. We adjust the pace and the scope to the group, so if you have less time we will shorten it without dropping what matters most.

Admission tickets

The guiding fee does not cover admission to museums and ticketed sites. Several of them sell timed entry and are often booked out days ahead in season, so it is worth mentioning them when you book.

Booking a date

Tell us how many of you there are, when you plan to come and roughly how much time you have. We normally reply the same day, with a suggested route and a price.

Before you set off

What to bring

Every route is walked, at a pace suited to the group. A few small things will simply make it more comfortable:

  • Comfortable shoes. There is a lot of walking, and much of the Old Town is cobbled.
  • Water, especially in summer. We pass shops and cafés, though not always when you want one.
  • Clothing suited to the weather. A hat and sunglasses in the heat, an umbrella or rain jacket in spring and autumn.
  • Some cash in Polish currency. Most places take cards, but not all. The currency in Poland is the złoty (PLN).
  • A charged phone or camera. There will be plenty worth photographing.
  • Any documents that entitle you to a discount, such as a school, student or pensioner card.
