The Kraków that shaped a future pope. Places tied to the life of Karol Wojtyła in the city he called home.

In the Footsteps of John Paul II with a guide: what you will see

During the tour you will become familiar with the most important sites CONNECTED with St Pope John Paul II.We will visit, among others, the places where Karol Wojtyła (the future Pope) attended lectures during his studies at the Jagiellonian University, the Bishops’ Palace and several churches where he would often pray and serve as a vicar. You will also see the Sanctuary of Divine Mercy in Łagiewniki featuring a monastery complex from the turn of the 19th century and a contemporary basilica. John Paul II repeatedly called Łagiewniki the capital of the Divine Mercy devotion. The old church houses the relics of St Sister Faustina canonized in 2000 by St John Paul II . We will also go to the “Have No Fear!” John Paul II Centre located in the vicinity of the Sanctuary.

Selected places: St Florian’s Church, St Mary’s Church, the Franciscan Church, the Bishops’ Palace and the “Pope’s window”, Kanonicza Street, the Wawel Cathedral and The John Paul II Wawel Cathedral Museum.

How long it takes and what to know

Duration

The route normally takes 3 – 4 h. We adjust the pace and the scope to the group, so if you have less time we will shorten it without dropping what matters most.

Admission tickets

The guiding fee does not cover admission to museums and ticketed sites. Several of them sell timed entry and are often booked out days ahead in season, so it is worth mentioning them when you book.

Before you set off

What to bring

Every route is walked, at a pace suited to the group. A few small things will simply make it more comfortable:

  • Comfortable shoes. There is a lot of walking, and much of the Old Town is cobbled.
  • Water, especially in summer. We pass shops and cafés, though not always when you want one.
  • Clothing suited to the weather. A hat and sunglasses in the heat, an umbrella or rain jacket in spring and autumn.
  • Some cash in Polish currency. Most places take cards, but not all. The currency in Poland is the złoty (PLN).
  • A charged phone or camera. There will be plenty worth photographing.
  • Any documents that entitle you to a discount, such as a school, student or pensioner card.
